I don't know, what you already checked, but the input source needs be selected in the GarageBand Preferences Audio and in the smart Controls for your audio track: I need to have the loop play indefinitely while I play a new track over it. Apr 24, 2011 Look right under the I/O and make sure that either input 1 or input 2 is selected. Hover your cursor and click down on it so that a drop down menu shows up, and select your input.

Just a note, this is a 10.4 only hint. Core Audio is slowly becoming what was advertised back in 10.1..

This will not work with Digidesign interfaces (i.e. 002, Mbox, etc).
Digi has hobbled their Core Audio plug-in so that it will not appear in the aggregation window.

To answer the question about USB and audio streams:
USB 1.1 (Or USB2.0 Full-Speed) should allow up to 6 channels of 48khz 24 bit audio, although that is using up the bus and if used often you may get drop-outs.
USB 2.0 High-Speed can get a lot more depending on the sampling rate and bit depth, but 16+ channels are possible. The same is true with Firewire 400, and of course more with Firewire 800.

I couldn't get this to work for a few days. I'd open the editor, make the new device, and it wouldn't show up in any applications. If I quit Audio MIDI Setup & reopened it, the new device was no longer there.
The problem was that I was doing this as a regular user, not an admin. I just finally got it to work by logging in as an admin user, making the device, and logging back in as my regular user. Now the regular user has the aggregate device available.

Do you think that other operations in the Audio Midi Setup CP also require you to be logged in as an Admin? I'm trying to enable the rear outputs to send the audio through while the interface is recording. There are check boxes in the firepod's I/O list, but they are greyed out for me. Haven't tried it as an admin yet, though.
Alinco dr-03t mods. Too bad I could find NADA about this on the Apple or Presonus support site..

i can't believe i'm trying to get help for this. it's such a simple problem and i'm fairly savvy with audio but this is ridiculous. here's my dilemna,
i'm trying to play my guitar through garage band. i'm using the new aluminum mac book and i hadn't tried this yet because i've been using the condenser mic to just get ideas down. now that i have ideas down sound quality is important and i want to direct inject my electric but it's just not working.
i'm using a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter on the guitar side, through a 1/8 cord into the line in jack right by the headphone jack.
and no sound. but garage band shows the wave forms when i record, yet when i playback nothing. basically no guitar sounds no matter what i do, but it records the waveform and i can see it in the sequencer and the editor. the stereo bars are bumping almost to the red and still no sound.
i've made sure to select real instrument track instead of software track.
i've tried selecting every input source and none of them work, i've cut the line-in input on in system preferences it's turned up and it picks up the sound in there too. there's a little bar that shows how much sound you're putting out and it's bumpin' away but still no sound.
i'm at a loss and i'm dying to get some real recording done. i've tried everything i know to do. i hate to bother with such a simple and fundamental portion of the program and it totally **** with me like this. i have a feeling the problem is really obvious as they usually are but anyway, hope someone can help. thx in advance.
